Springline provided contaminated land and soil management support for the ongoing development of Burlington Village, an established retirement village in Christchurch.
Naturally elevated arsenic concentrations had been identified across parts of the development area, creating a significant potential soil disposal liability. Springline reviewed the available data, undertook further targeted investigation using a combination of XRF screening and laboratory testing, and worked directly with Environment Canterbury and local cleanfill facilities to better understand management options.
This additional work demonstrated that a substantial proportion of the excavated soil could be appropriately managed as cleanfill rather than being sent to higher-cost disposal facilities. The result was a more proportionate soil management strategy, greater certainty for the earthworks programme, and significant disposal cost savings for the client.
